Tribute to Professor Jean Louis Abdourahim Ndiaye

The OPT-MVAC network joins the global health community in mourning the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Professor Jean Louis Abdourahim Ndiaye.

Jean Louis was a teacher-researcher and professor of parasitology, respected and appreciated by his peers and a mentor to an entire generation of young researchers. He was a valued collaborator and a dear friend to us, with whom we shared many journeys in West Africa and jointly led numerous research projects on malaria, seasonal chemoprevention (OPT-SMC), resistance monitoring and more recently, the introduction of the malaria vaccine (OPT-MVAC).

He also contributed to projects aimed at strengthening the capacity of young researchers and staff from national malaria control programmes, as well as national tuberculosis programmes, through the activities of the WARN/CARN-TB network.

Jean Louis built a strong team around him and established fruitful partnerships, enabling the implementation of high-quality research projects. His passing leaves a tremendous void, both professionally and personally. We will remember his kindness, diplomacy, generosity, availability, ability to bring people together and his unwavering commitment to advancing science and public health.

We, colleagues from the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), the European Vaccine Initiative, the Rabat Collaborating Centre (RCC), as well as the national malaria control programmes of West and Central African countries who collaborated with him through the OPT-SMC project, extend our sincere condolences to his wife, children, family and all his colleagues at the University of Thiès and Cheikh Anta Diop University.

We share your grief and will cherish the memory of a remarkable person, taken far too soon.

Dear friend, rest in peace.
